I look at todays supplement market (electrolytes, protein etc) and I wish there was a government agency involved. It’s chaos and riddled with “dirty” products and unlabeled ingredients.

The trustworthy brands typically load everything up with sugar or caffeine. It’s hard to trust raw ingredients without a chemistry set.

As you mentioned "ingesting botulism was something people cared about (and still is!)". I would argue there is no real need for a central authority to determine one standard to fit all. Making the lower quality alternatives illegal helped Heinz eliminate competition so it could gain more market share as it favor's their business model. Some customers will want 3rd party certification and each requires different levels of certification but we all know this comes at a real cost (skipping regulation and having regulation all cost). A free market is superior as there are multiple levels of regulations that are determined by a dynamic market than a one size fits all with a central authority. The Law (Bastiat) or Henry Hazlitt's Economics in One Lesson are short/free if you want to read more of these crazy ideas :)

Heinz has a great product that value is the customers mind is beyond simple balance sheet calculations as you mention making it hard to evaluate. Hard things open up investing opportunity.
